Reading William Gibson

Was it only two days ago that William Gibson’s Distrust That Particular Flavor arrived in the mail? I am nearly done and enjoying his wonderful wordsmithing. His new book is really a collection of old articles and other nonfiction Gibson has written over the last couple decades.

I picked up Gibson’s Spook Country a couple years ago and enjoyed it immensely. In this newly published collection he explains what his books are about.

That might sound funny (it does to me), but he makes an interesting point about novels.

Novels require some explanation or at least some prerequisite knowledge in order to fully appreciate them.

They differ significantly from film in that way.

He recounts the very first time he went to see a film and how he understood the experience within an hour.

Ease of use is what I’ll call it.

That ease of use is why multitudes will go to the movies and not bother to read a book (or the book that inspired it).

We do miss something when we don’t read.

Mark Twain said it over a century ago.

[I just added the first name “Mark” because there are a number of people who might not know of a man simply “Twain”.]

“A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.”

We must write in such a way that more people will want to read our work.

William Gibson does that for me.

Thanks to WordPress for reminding me:

“Easy reading is damn hard writing.”

Writing For EzineArticles

Recently I decided to mix it up a bit with my writing. I started a new blog about making money online and today I submitted two articles to One is titled “Use Caution Making Money Online” and the other is “College Preparation For First Generation College Students”. It takes about a week to get articles approved, so I’ll let you know when that happens. If you haven’t checked out I encourage you to do so. You may find that you like to write for them a little bit. At the very least it’s another way to practice the process of writing. With this and what I’ve written there today I’m over 2500 words. Now what about those aliens?

Let’s Grow Together & See What Happens!

How To Make Money At Home (U.S.)

This may change or I may add to it in the future, but the essence of it I expect will remain the same!
If you click on the About page above you will see what’s below:

You can do what you’re passionate about.
You can make money on the internet and/or from home.
The longest journey begins with a single step.

Even as I write this I am exploring how to improve this blog. I just learned tonight how to put my dog’s image in the upper left of the page near the WordPress “W”.

Just as I don’t need to be an expert at WordPress to get started on this blog, you don’t need to be an expert to get started creating the life you want. But you do need to get started and keep moving forward.

How To Make Money At Home (U.S.)

That’s what I’m passionate about.

You read that right.

I’m passionate about helping people do what they’re passionate about.

I see different ways to achieve that and I’ll share them in future posts.

One way that you can get to the point where you are living your passion is through personal development.

I know that not everyone is ready to talk to a coach at this moment.

Someone who used to work for a game company has made an application that’s online and so far it’s free.

My Creativity Is Taking Me To New Places

I just started another blog that is not related to writing, except insofar as a writer can convince or illuminate or educate.

My new blog is about online business that you can engage in at home.

I’ve mentioned earlier that I have two new mentors.

You’re welcome to visit anytime.

You might learn something that will lead you to have the freedom to do what you’re passionate about whether that’s writing or something else.

Who knows? You might learn a guerrilla method of selling books or something.

Here it is!

Taking A Little Break!

Right now I’m excited because of what I’m learning from my online mentors. Yes. I said mentors! As in, more than one.

I will continue to write my fiction and nonfiction books and still have my goal of December 30, 2012 for the publication of two books.

I will definitely continue my 30 days in a row when I can, but I may or may not achieve it in the run up to our vacation.

That is not to say that I won’t be working.

I’m learning some things that I want to take advantage of NOW!

BEFORE my family and I go to North Carolina and Nevada.

The thing is that while you want to have your own discipline to reach your goals, whether writing or something else, you don’t want to make a law of it that prevents you from doing something else that’s truly productive.

I’m not watching television – except when I’m on the exercise bike.

I’m learning about how to create a different kind of written product, for lack of a better word.

My new blog will be up soon, but even that is taking a back seat to this new information I’m taking in.

Have a great rest of the week! Stay on track with your goals!

I know that some people reading my blog are writers. That’s what they do and that’s what they want to do. Period. Or they are people who want to derive more income from writing until they reach the point where they can give up their other job. Or they like their job and they like writing.

They blog so that people will see their writing and buy their books if they have them.

I would like to publish books this year.

However, that’s not the only way that I’m open to creating income.

For those of you who can’t possibly think of making money by selling your books, I apologize.

I’m ok with making money from books that I create.

I’m even ok if some books are designed with making money in mind.

But in the long run I would like the freedom to write whatever I please with enough income coming in from previous sources.

Because I’m open to creating more income as well as writing and publishing books I decided to check out an online mentor who looks really honest to me.

I’ve seen a lot of them over the years.

This one impressed me (and I’m not going to tell you who he is today – so there!) with his sincerity AND with his track record.

So I am using two strategies starting today and tomorrow.

One strategy involves creating another blog. I’m in the process of doing that.

From what I can see this blog will be a potential income generator. (Theoretically this one could, but I don’t mean $100 every decade. I already have one of those. LOL)

The other idea is using a domain name to generate income through affiliate marketing.

Hence the title of this post.

It’s an interesting concept. is something I would not have thought of anytime soon if not for this mentor. I’ll write more about it on my new blog. is already taken, but the owner isn’t doing anything with it right now.

There’s a tool called keyword tool (appropriately enough) that you can search on Google. It lets you know how often a phrase is searched in a month. I thought that kids and math was searched enough that it made sense to risk a little less than $11.00 on it for the year. If someone purchases the product just once in the next year I will have made a small profit. You can check kids and math using the keyword tool and see if you think that number is big enough. I was pretty impressed.

I find this a little interesting and it didn’t take me more than a few minutes to do.

These are the kinds of ideas I will share on my new blog.

By the way, the product that you will find at looks very helpful for people who want to learn math or teach math to kids.

Now back to our regularly scheduled writing exercise already in progress.

I’m tired of being sick right now. I don’t know if I had some bad salsa last night or if I have a bug.

Is it possible that I’m sick because one of our cats died and I buried it?

I’ll have to do a search on that.

Where was I?

There’s the dog doing his thing outside in the dark. Chasing something.

This morning my wife decided to let the cat outside and then couldn’t find it. That was fun at an hour earlier than I had hoped to get up.

After I drove the cat, who appeared as if from another dimension (we could hear him and not see him for a couple minutes), toward her and he was within a few feet of her, she asked me to get him.

“Really? You couldn’t have asked me that when he was nearly as close to me as he is to you now?”

I think she saw the truth right there and decided to get the cat herself. She did in about a minute as she called him repeatedly while he wound his way back to the place where he had started his journey into wonderland.

Now I was welcome to go back to bed as she left for school.

I had no luck getting back to sleep.

I’m not having any luck getting to sleep right now.

Overtired? Maybe.

I’m glad to spend a few minutes with you.

And I am very sincere in saying that the online mentor I have discovered over the past 24 hours or so seems very impressive.

I’m ok with taking a little detour into something with less literary aspirations.

Monetary aspirations are just fine.

My apologies to the socialists and those who insist on being starving artists.

Come to think of it, this guy mentioned that some people might think he’s a socialist because he’s so reasonable.

Tired Again

It was a good night at Reality Changers tonight. We’re getting near to the end of the school year and all the students who are going to four year schools have gotten their offers from those schools. I did see one guy who is not who seemed disappointed, but it’s hard to tell. He doesn’t seem like the happiest guy anyway.

Lots of smiling faces though. One guy is deciding where he’ll transfer after Cal State San Marcos. He wants to be a writer. He’s good and he knows it. Not in an arrogant way. He is simply confident that he has some skills and he’s confident that writing is what he wants to do. That’s so great. And somewhat unusual. Many of them know where they want to go, but what they want to do is different.

I’m glad to be a part of the program.

Tonight I was thinking about the possibility that I could use Kickstarter to fundraise to benefit Reality Changers. Here’s the website:

Maybe I could make an album (I can actually sing) and get people to donate to benefit our public speakers group within RC.

I know some local musicians who are actually professionals and this would allow me to kill two birds with one stone. I would like to be recorded before I get so old that my voice has changed.

Though I guess that’s not for sure. I saw Donovan on the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame special the other night and he sounds the same even though he looks like Donovan’s grandfather.

I haven’t been this tired while writing for a while. Maybe not since high school. LOL

I remember staying up late a couple times. Once I only got about an hour’s sleep and decided that if I had to do that again it would be better to stay up all night. I remember laying my head on the pillow and then it was time to get up. What a weird sensation.

But some of these RC students stay up until 3 am or later on a regular basis. There’s that much work if they are in Advanced Placement classes. I really didn’t know what it took in high school like some of these students. Of course, it is worse today than back then. Even in middle school they do a lot more work than we did in the 70s.

I think that some things are being lost.

What they really need is the ability to think.

That’s not always being taught.

And they need more voices telling them how hard they need to work if they want to go to college. I think too many look at their peers or friends to see what they’re doing and that only helps if you’re around the really hard workers.

Some of them need to understand that some people they go to school with are going to be working in fast food or at least something much less demanding than being a lawyer, doctor, marine biologist, what have you…

That’s what happens when you are a first generation college student. Or candidate for college. There’s no one in your family to show you the way. There’s not enough in the budget for individual attention for all students from the counselors.

I don’t think they realize how pro-active they need to be.

Reality Changers are fortunate in that regard. The culture is about doing things differently. CHANGING their reality – the world that surrounds them.

So we will have the great graduation ceremony at USD on Sunday. There will still be RC meetings to keep them on track, but this early will make it possible for perhaps 2,000 people to attend.

Last year I couldn’t attend because my nephew was graduating on the same day as RC’s ceremony.

I’ve only been to one of these before. This is the whole shebang.

What do you know…spellcheck was ok with shebang.

We also have a graduation at each location and I’m sure that will be in a couple weeks here in Solana Beach.

There’s a girl graduating this year who has an older sister and an older brother who are both graduates of Reality Changers.

That’s cool. I remember when she was a freshman.

Now she’s been one of the big leaders of the group.

She even interviewed (is that the word?) at Harvard. She was nervous and postponed, but she eventually went.

She didn’t get in, but I’m sure she’s proud to have had the chance.

She has a lot of other schools to choose from.

That’s the ticket!

Momentum Is A Fickle Thing

I have learned this lesson before and hopefully won’t have to learn it again. I was rolling along with my writing and then took a break that was longer than I expected. I just have to get back to it here (and on my private blog) with the same discipline I had a couple weeks ago. I did remember that my alien using technology to look like magic. At least he did in centuries past…
